Flame length measurements of the turbulent plume

چکیده
A steady source of buoyancy creates a plume. Experi mental and theoretical studies of plumes have been mainly concerned with the far-field (self-similar) velocity and den sity profiles. •-3 Yet in many practical situations, knowledge regarding the rate of molecular scale mixing of the buoyant fluid with its environment is needed. This is especially true in the context of atmospheric studies, where models for' the formation and growth stages of clouds utilize the turbulent plume dynamics. In this Letter a simple argument for mixing in plumes is presented and its implications are examined in light of the experimental findings. A global measure of plume entrainment E is the ratio of axial volume flux Qat any station to the initial volume flux Q0 at the source. Rouse, Yih, and Humphreys 1 reported the mean plume volume flux in the self-similar region to be

Resolution Requirements in Stochastic Field Simulation of Turbulent Premixed Flames
The spatial resolution requirements of the Stochastic Fields probability density function approach are investigated in the context of turbulent premixed combustion simulation. The Stochastic Fields approach is an attractive way to implement transported Probability Density Function modelling into Large Eddy Simulations of turbulent combustion. In premixed combustion LES, the numerical grid shoul...
متن کاملModeling on the Interaction of the Turbulent Diffusion Flames between a Vertical Burning Wall and a Pool Fire
Until now, very few works have been devoted to the predictions of the flame structure resulting from the combustion of a vertical burning wall adjacent to a rectangular pool fire at the floor level. This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional model to the prediction of the aerodynamic field and the thermal structure using a finite volume method for solving the fluid dynamic equa...
متن کاملRadiation modeling of a turbulent diffusion flame in diesel engine
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of radiation heat transfer on temperature distribution and heat flux to the walls of a diesel engine. A diffusion flame is modeled in a simple cylindrical geometry and boundary conditions are defined. A specific solver which can model the turbulent diffusion flame by considering radiation in participating media is used to solve the problem....
متن کاملA phenomenological model of near-field fire entrainment
A phenomenological model of air entrainment into combusting regions of axisymmetric fire plumes is developed and compared with some existing experimental entrainment data. The model considers engulfment of ambient air into a fire plume due to the action of the toroidal vortices that are formed periodically close to the source of an axisymmetric fire. It is shown that the diffusive entrainment r...
متن کاملA New Simplified PDF Method for Calculating Major Species Concentrations and Burning in Turbulent Fires
A simpl i fied method is presented for calculati ng mean major species concentrations (02' CO2, CO) in turbulent fires for any fuel given the species distribution of the same fuel in a laminar diffusion flame. This method, verified by extensive measurements, uses a probability d Iat r t bution function (Pdf) for the conserved scalar in turbulent fires together wi th a uniform mi xedness paramet...
